Turkey Democratized

The Etatist Turkish Republic and Its Political and Socio-Economic Performance form 1980-1999: A Developing State Impacted by International Organizations and Interdependence

Dora Nadolski, PhD

This text provides the reader with an understanding of the theoretical perspective of interdependence among nations. This book applies the requisites imposed by external organizations to the internal infrastructures of Turkey. Discerning how a nation transformed itself from a Muslim state into a republic is a major contribution to scholarship in the current context of Turkey's geographical proximity to surrounding Islamic nations. Turkey's compliance with the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development's (OECD) recommendations and regulations required for full European Union (EU) membership are thoroughly examined throughout this study. Professor Nadolski's investigation of these detailed issues significantly contributes to the body of scholarship in the areas of international relations, organizations, and political economy.

"This book would certainly help the reader to understand the struggles a former Muslim nation state encountered and continues to encounter to enter the western world trade blocks --to get their products on the market, to purchase goods at a reduced tariff rate, and to become a full member of the European Union," states Professor Nadolski. "Also the struggles with human rights issues, the Kurds of Turkey, and a brief history of the reform processes after 1923, the adoption of the Swiss Civil Code of Law rather than Islamic law -- and about the importance of a strategically located nation admist and surrounded by the Arab Muslim world."
